as far as i understand everybody has some degree of gingivitis (since gingivitis is the inflammation of the gingival tissues and since we all have biofilm there is continuously an immune respose to this, which involves inflammation in the sulcus. or something along those lines)... but 80% of the population has somewhere in their mouth chronic gingivitis... whether it be mild moderate or severe..
yea as nikki said the presence of gingivitis is practically universal as both mild forms of gingivitis as well as perio are functional with normal health within an individual.
If you look in our green perio book on page 6 it states " gingivitis affects 50-90% of adults worldwide, depending on its precise definition"... check it out.

It is bound to be a large percentage because gingivitis can develop so quickly with inadequate oral hygiene.
