Does smoking change the bacterial flora in subgingival biofilm? Explain.

Smoking DOES NOT change the types of bacterial flora in the subgingival biofilm.

However, I think it is possible that smoking may lead to a quantitative increase in bacterial flora, due to smoking's immunosuppresant effects. Maybe.

yea I agree with Nick. Smoking suppresses the immune response therefore the gingiva's immune response is suppressed however the periodontal damage is greater. Dr Hirsch has said in our notes that smokers have no large difference in the quality of periodontopathogens or bacterial flora in comparison to non-smokers.
