PASS SESSION TRUE AND FALSE

One of the pass session activities had true and false sample questions, and I think I found an error (unless it was just a typo from me). With the question:

"Systemic conditioning factors can cause chronic gingivitis"

The answer is false, on my marked piece of paper it had true placed into the box (and confirmed with a red tick from marking it correct). I don't know if this was just my error I placed on the paper, or if the PASS leaders stated the answer was true. Systemic conditions modify the response to plaque of the gingival tissues, but don't cause chronic gingivitis directly. I just thought I better say something just in case everyone had written true on their answer paper like I did!

Lots of love

on my paper it said TRUE - i think its because the question stated

"Systemic conditioning factors CAN cause chronic gingivitis"

so systemic conditioning factors don't CAUSE chronic gingivitis but it CAN be a cause of chronic gingivitis - meaning to say it CAN be one of the contributing causes of chronic gingivitis

i'm not sure if this answers your question at all but that's just what was discussed at the PASS session from what i remember.

=)

i reckon this question is worded stupidly and can see how it could be true and it could be false. isn't it how the host reponds to the systemic conditioning factors that indicates if chronic gingivitis is caused???

The answer i rekon would be true. if the question is "systemic conditioning factors CAN cause chronic ging" this is true - not all forms of gingivitis are plaque induced... (look at 2nd year notes). for example some are caused by autoimmune diseases - if a person has Lichen Planus (Dr. Hirshe's favourite disorder)... they can get ginigvitis from it as an autoimmune respose and it is not biofilm related. so yes, systemic conditioning factors CAN cause gingivitis.

On theother hand.. systemic conditioning factors CANNOT cause chronic PERIO... for this the bio film is a necessary component.

Hope this helps.

No, systemic conditions do not cause chronic gingivitis, plaque causes it. It specifically says in Dr Hirschs notes (module 2, session 1, pg 25) that systemic conditions do not cause chronic gingivitis, they modify the hosts response. They can mask it, exacerbate it and make it hard to heal, but they DO NOT cause chronic gingivitis.

Lichen planus doesn't cause chronic gingivitis, it is a non-plaque induce gingival condition, NOT chronic gingivitis. Chronic gingivitis is plaque induced. We are talking about chronic gingivitis, not gingival conditions/lesions

I AGREE, systemic conditioning factors DO NOT cause chronic gingivitis, i reckon the PASS leaders must of got that wrong

well the more and more i think about it the more it has to be false ( i admit i was wrong :( haha) because no matter what systemic factor you have there will always be bacteria there. and gingivitis in the inflammation of the gingiva to a stimulus... and it wouldnt occur if there wanst anyting specifically there... thanks guys!

p.s. i hate true and false answers.. they're doing my head in...

Guys .. the answer is false for the obvious reasons, but perhaps there was a typo somewhere coz the original statement was:

"Systemic conditioning factors cause chronic gingivitis." which of course is False....

I am glad you have all managed to clarify this by thinking it out and using critical analysis .. well done. now you guys will never forget it!

I hope there aren't anymore mistakes in the PASS info that we haven't picked up on, none of us can afford to get wrong answers!!! Minus points are evil :)
