Hey Guys,

I have question: It can find that approx 80% of the population is affected by chronic gingivitis, but what % of the population is affected by chronic periodontitis? I couldnt find it in my epidemiology chapter of our books.

Thanks

umm well a study said that the percentage of people affected by severe periodontitis was between 5-15%. I think the percentage of the population affected by chronic perio is still unknown to be exact due to the lack of proper epidemiologic study. I got that from our 2nd year perio notes.

That's about right Robert.. I would suggest you all read through Rob's epidemiology chapter coz there is bound to be a section of questions on epidemiology....

From my first semester revision notes:

5 to 15% of any population have SEVERE generalised periodontitis.

22% in the U.S. have MILD periodontitis.

Incidence of periodontitis is greater in developing countries, however, SEVERE periodontitis has simular rates worldwide.
